Brown, who is 117 years and 36 days old, took over from Italian Emma Morano who passed away today.
Morano’s life spanned three centuries, two World Wars, 90 Italian governments, an abusive marriage, the loss of her only son.
Brown was born March 10, 1900 and is believed to be one of the two remaining persons who were born in the 19th century.

The Child Development Agency (CDA) yesterday pledged to help the family whose house was destroyed by fire in the Washington Boulevard area of St Andrew on Monday through its Children and Family Support Unit.
The blaze left 11 people, including four children ages six months to 13 years old, homeless. The children, according to the CDA, are currently staying with relatives.
The CDA’s Children and Family Support Unit provides assistance to children and families facing economic challenges and instability. CDA said since the start of the year, the CFSU team provided intervention to 4,636 children and their families.
“Having done a needs assessment, our initial assistance will be focused on providing the family with food, clothing and other personal care items; this will be followed by grief counselling support,” Rochelle Dixon, public relations and communications manager for CDA, is quoted as saying.

Fifty-nine-year-old Dorrel Francis said that she “fought” and “cried” for her daughter, Nerice Samuels, who the Court of Appeal freed yesterday of a charge of unlawful wounding after a judge sentenced her without a trial or a lawyer.
“It couldn’t work that way. I look at her and tell her that don’t work in a my school,” she said, after comforting her 33-year-old daughter, who cried after hearing the court’s judgment.
“Mi did have fi spend di money and know seh mi coulda lose the money or it coulda go down the drain, but not fi she (Judge Judith Pusey) fi put mi child behind the bar like that. It was so bad.”
The Court of Appeal ruled that Chief Parish Court Judge Pusey’s handling of the 2015 case breached due process and did not serve the interest of justice.
Francis explained that the situation caused her a lot of distress because her daughter was sent to prison in October 2015, ten months after one of her younger daughters had died.

The couple had developed a long-distance relationship after he called to say she had won $24m US and a new car in a lottery. He appeared untroubled by Shirley’s dementia and asked for a picture of her.
But he never appeared. Instead, he harassed Shirley and her family with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of phone calls in a complicated scam that eventually led her to lose more than $200,000 and her home.
